Type 2 Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body is resistant to the insulin it produces (a hormone that regulates blood sugar).
Hyperglycaemia, or raised blood sugar, is a common effect of uncontrolled diabetes and over time leads to serious damage to many of the body's systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels.
The number of people with diabetes has nearly quadrupled worldwide from 108 million in 1980 to over 425 million today.
Prevalence is increasing worldwide and in 2016, diabetes was the direct cause of 1.6 million deaths.
Insulin resistance is the most common cause of type 2 diabetes (formerly called non-insulin-dependent, or adult-onset).
Genetics and lifestyle (excess body weight and physical inactivity) are the most important cause of Type 2 diabetes.
The majority of people with diabetes around the world (90-95%) have Type 2 diabetes and until recently it was only seen in adults but is now also occurring with greater frequency in children due to the obesity epidemic, worldwide.
It is well-accepted that exercise has a positive effect on reducing glucose in the blood.
Put simply, exercise has an insulin like effect, regardless of how insulin resistant the person is, because it works from inside-out.

These movements deliver the appropriate stimulus needed to activate the body’s natural adaptive response. In the same way that a muscle becomes stronger by overloading the muscle, a bone can also increase its density with bioDensity’s unique osteogenic loading system which helps people of all ages reach this limit without causing pain, muscle soreness, or fatigue. Joan Bray PT, DPT
Born in Kentucky, raised in Indiana, transplanted to North Carolina in 1980. I completed my first degree at North Carolina State University in 1985 with a B.A. degree in Speech Communications with emphasis in communicative disorders then transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Medical Dept. and completed a B.

I returned to UNC Chapel Hill to complete the Doctorate of Physical Therapy degree in 2009. I am certified as a Level 3 MELT Instructor and am also ACE certified Personal Trainer.
I have a passion for assisting people to find non-pharmaceutical solutions to improve longevity, reduce pain and dysfunctions that can occur in life.
